“Circles and Curves” on display at the Gray Library

A “permanent” quilt book collection will be housed at the WashingtonCounty/Gray Branch Library at 5026 Bobby Hicks Highway in Gray.  At the present time, the library holds over 100 quilt books of various kinds.  You can check out the quilt books (and other books and items as well) by using your Washington County Library Card.

To get a library card, bring your driver’s license and one I.D. that has your name and correct address if your driver’s license does not have your correct address to the Gray Library during library hours.  You will fill out a short registration form and get your card in about 5 minutes.  At that time, you will be able to check out quilt books and other materials.

The Gray Library has a courier system among all the libraries in a six-county region that includes the public libraries of Carter, Greene, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington Counties and the academic libraries of E.T.S.U. and Northeast State.  If the Gray Library does not have the book you are looking for, you may request it from one of the other libraries in the region.  Go to our online catalog at http://wclibrarytn.org/ and use the barcode number on your library card to access your library account.  Follow the directions to place your request.  OR, you can call the Gray Library and one of the staff members will place the request for you.  When the book comes, a library staff member will call you and you can pick up the book at the Gray Library.  You will have 2 weeks to keep the books and they can be renewed up to two times for a total of 6 weeks if no one is waiting for it.

If the book you want is not located at any of our regional libraries, we will place a request with the State of Tennessee library database and the national library database to try to obtain a copy for you to use, free of charge.  The only charges you may incur is if your book(s) is returned late ($.10 per day the library is open), the book is returned damaged (costs could be as much as the price of a replacement plus a $5 processing fee) or if the owning library assesses a charge (which is rare).

The Washington County/Gray Branch Library has a space to display quilts and wall hangings.  It will be one of the first things people will see when they walk into the library.  Since September 2008, this space has been available for up to one month for a guild member to display a quilted item.  The space will accommodate a quilted item up to 52” wide.  Every effort will be made to keep the public from handling the items displayed.  The library will include a brief note about the quilted item that will be on the wall next to the displayed item.  Please include your name and community, the pattern used and/or the name of the piece, when the item was finished and the occasion from which the item was created.  It will be posted that the display is sponsored by the Appalachian Heritage Quilters.

We hope to find other venues in the Gray community to display our works.  If you know of a place that would be willing to properly display quilted items, please contact our President or Vice President.
